Griffin Radio was a core council club that diminished over time. With its leading seniors graduating and the 55th Street station now being used as storage there really wasn’t any room for this club to be revived. Freshmen Marchael Giles and Emilee Wermenchuk saw the opportunity to reinstate the club and give it a new spin that would better suit the Marymount Manhattan College community.
Griffin Radio’s revival did not come without its challenges. The traditional radio format that the club was using could no longer be an option. The radio equipment in the 55th dorms was outdated and the dorms needed to use the station as storage space. This is why President Marchael Giles, and Vice-President Emilee Wermenchuk decided to recreate Griffin Radio in podcast form.
Podcasts are a thriving new media that are easier to create and more accessible to the masses. Students can listen to Griffin Radio’s podcasts anytime and anywhere. Once they are put on the club’s SoundCloud, students can listen on their way to school or at home. It seems appropriate for Griffin Radio to format itself as a podcast. These podcasts will be released bi-weekly and will cover MMC news, hot and trending issues, and current events. The podcasts are student made and student edited to bring the authentic voice of MMC to all students. The community looks forward to the new podcasts that will ll the space of the former Griffin radio station.
Wermenchuk saw the need for Griffin Radio in the MMC community. Audio news “provides such a different experience” and “allows people to connect to the news and people in such a unique way.” Griffin Radio “was something that needed to come back to the MMC community.”
It also provides students a new platform for self-expression and creativity. Giles sees the revival of this club as encouraging students to “use their actual voice to talk about what they’re passionate about.” The revival of this club provides students with a new art form that will generate creativity and excite students. Giles acknowledges that students at Marymount “use their voice in many different arts we have at MMC” and hopes that Griffin Radio will be one of them.
The first scheduled podcast release is Monday Dec 4th. Get ready to listen to MMC’s own students on Griffin Radio’s debut!
