Matters within Student Government Association have been on hold for the past two weeks on account of election season. Over the past two weeks, in place of our regularly scheduled meetings, SGA has attended the ‘Unlocal’ Immigration event on March 27, and the SGA Candidate Forum on the April 3. Both events were well attended and, we felt, were very good events in place of meetings. With election season, many plans were put on the back burner, and many events and initiatives were placed on hold. However, SGA’s Senate and Executive Board continue to move forward effectively and strategically with their efforts in the end of the school year.
Previously, plans were in place for the end of the semester and school year, and the members of SGA were all hard at work. Senator for Commuter Students Sabrina Sooknanan has spent the semes- ter creating a Commuter Student video, and helping to create the Commuter Assistant Program with Carol Jackson. Upon completion of the Commuter Student video, Senator Sooknanan held a red carpet screening event to show the video to the students.
Vice President Tai Haughton has been corresponding with a member of the Student Government Association at Brown University to get advice on implementing free pads and tampons on campus. This is an initiative the VP has been working on implementing since the beginning of the school year, and is hoping to get it accomplished before the end of her term.
Many members are already looking forward to next school year. Our edits and new draft of our club constitution has taken longer to refine than originally anticipated, and so we will be submitting it for review this school year, but it will not be implemented for the club until the fall of 2017. Some of the changes include more division of responsibility within the Executive Board, addition of senator positions, specifying senator description details and points of contact, and some refinement of procedure in meetings and voting.
The returning members of SGA are already meeting and starting to discuss ideas and initiatives for the following school year, and are making plans to start some work in the summer.
SGA meetings are open to all and students and are between the hours of 1:00 – 2:30pm on Monday’s in the President’s Conference Room. If any student would like to be involved this year or next year email email@example.com.
